Description

Geotextile tubes are essentially large, cylindrical structures fabricated from high-strength geosynthetic materials. Tailored to different engineering requirements, they employ permeable geotextiles for dewatering purposes, or non-permeable composite layers to provide reliable containment and hydraulic barriers when needed. They can be viewed as heavy-duty industrial “pillows” built to endure the extreme conditions of marine environments. These tubes are designed to be filled with slurry—usually a mixture of water and locally sourced sand or dredged sediments.
Constructed from specially engineered woven or composite geosynthetics, these tubes are selected for their high tensile strength, as well as their unique permeability: water can pass through the fabric pores, while solid particles are effectively retained inside. Through this natural filtration process, water gradually drains out, leaving the tube as a compact, dense, and highly stable structure.
Made from specialized polymer materials, geotextile tubes exhibit excellent resistance to UV radiation and biodegradation. This inherent durability makes them highly suitable for marine applications, where they are continuously exposed to saltwater, temperature variations, and abrasive sediment movement.
Coastal erosion is an escalating global challenge, driven by rising sea levels and increasingly severe storm surges. Traditional ‘hard’ engineering solutions, such as concrete seawalls and rock armour, are often prohibitively expensive and disruptive to the environment.Geotextile tubes have emerged as a leading “soft” engineering alternative. These large, permeable, sand-filled containers provide a strong, flexible and environmentally friendly barrier against the relentless power of the ocean.

Applications

Applications of geotextile tubes

Thanks to their exceptional versatility, geotextile tube technology can be used to address a wide range of engineering challenges. With their monolithic structure, superior durability and strong adaptability, these tubes provide long-term erosion control solutions for onshore and offshore projects alike.

Geotextile Tube Breakwaters
Breakwaters and groynes play a critical role in dissipating wave energy before it reaches the shoreline. In these applications, geotextile tubes can either form the core of composite structures or fully replace conventional hydraulic frameworks. By inducing wave breaking in offshore waters, they create tranquil nearshore conditions and effectively protect beaches from erosion and washout.

Geotextile Tube Revetments
As a direct shoreline protection measure, revetments and seawalls constructed with geotextile tubes are a cost-efficient alternative to traditional rock and concrete structures. Supported by the fabric’s excellent filtration performance, they are particularly effective for permanent scour remediation. They form a sturdy barrier against direct wave impact, safeguarding embankments, roadbeds, and adjacent infrastructure.

Other coastal and marine applications

Marine-grade geotextile tube systems can be used for a variety of specialised engineering purposes:
Land reclamation and bank stabilisation: The tubes contain sand and other fill materials, which mitigate wind and wave erosion while significantly accelerating construction schedules for land reclamation projects.
Dike, dam and dune reinforcement: They reinforce natural flood defence systems, such as dikes and coastal dunes, by forming a strengthened internal core that enhances structural stability and flood resistance.
Dewatering solutions: They deliver economical dewatering systems for material extraction, conditioning and disposal, with simple operation and low maintenance requirements, offering more than just erosion control.
Tailings dam construction: In mining projects, they enable the incremental raising of tailings dam embankments, supporting environmentally responsible and economically sustainable mine waste management.
